If the parents are not willing to do anything about it, then it is tough. Being cruel to animals is NOT a normal behavior for a boy that has been taught properly. All you can do is try to teach him that life is precious, and that harming animals is wrong. If the parents will not step in to enforce this, though, then they are part of the problem. Who knows? Maybe THAT is why they don't want him to go to a therapist. If you are close to the parents, then you should discuss this with them.

A child without an instilled sense of life and death, right and wrong may not think twice about harming another animal stemming from imprinted xenophobia.

They are also likely to take risks to their own personal safety.

A respect for living beings must be taught to the child lest he or she torment what could otherwise be called a pest.

Disrespect for life does escalate, so at all costs force your nephew to discuss his feelings openly and often.

I'd suggest coming up with friendly games to play involving creatures he tortures. Highlight the positive aspects of the animals.

If his parents really 'don't care' or just 'won't help him become more civilized' and it is IMPORTANT to you that this boy learns to 'respect and cherish animals' then it is UP TO YOU to start his 'education' ... take the boy for a 'weekend' at LEAST once a month, and take him to places where he can see, and touch, and LEARN about animals ... buy him books about 'caring' about them (and for them) ... and TALK, TALK, TALK with him about all of the AMAZING things that animals can 'teach us' ...
Also, if you can get it (it's on a cable TV channel) you should RECORD the new show done by the daughter of the 'animal guy' who was killed in Australia ... her first name is Bindi and she's only 8, but she truly LOVES animals, and would be an execllent 'role model' for this boy. I'm sorry, but I am drawing a 'blank' on the last name, but if you do a search with Animals, and Bindi, you'll get enough information on her, I'm sure.

I think that they want to feel powerful and in control of their circumstances. Consult a therapist on your own and ask them what you should do exactly. I hope everything works out. Do something now because this is an indicator of their behavior towards people eventually.

Start by telling him that its not the right thing to do but with as much understanding as poss.
Never show a child your irritated by a certain behavior of his...remain calm n collected. If he realizes it bothers u, he will get defiant and probably do it even more...

If he doesn't listen after much understanding, what he does to the animal, do th same to him.
Hopefully, it will be his lesson learnt.

He probably feels neglected and is taking out his frustrations on defenseless creatures. Find something to occupy his time and educate him on showing compassion towards animals. If he should injure someones pet he could get a "real world" education from the owner.

Its unfortunate but its sometimes a phase boys go thru, but they do grow out of it. As long as its not too bad (like actually torturing an animal or killing it) just tell him that grown ups don't do that sort of thing and if he wants to be treated like a grown up he will need to act like one. I am sorry this is happening. Good luck.

killing or harming animals is the second step towards harming others. I would get him help...If the parents arn't doing anything and they don't pay attention to him enough that is proboly why he is harming animals. Parent neglect is the first step...Or he could have just jumped onto the second step...Next he will start to hurt u or his parents or a girlfriend...unless ustop and get him help...Just watch...hate to see kids turn out this way...:(
