Sure you can, but be prepared for the possible long road ahead. It's also possible that for you to make it, you'll literally have to make it yourself to get it seen.
Register your script with WGA.org, try to get an agent, and see what happens from there. If you're not having any luck, try to make it on a low budget indepenent scale yourself and submit it to film festivals.
If that's not a possibility for you, there's always other contests like project greenlight and on the lot.
Good luck!

Hey Darla, Damon and Affleck had been working actors for ten years before "Hunting." They had Rob Reiner to advise them and Robin Williams attached to the project. They didn't come out of nowhere. Okay, in the 60's Rod Serling made a offer. He accepted submissions for "Twilight Zone" episodes
from anyone. He got thousands and none were good enough to air. If you write a script that is good you will be signed to an agent. If it's good someone will buy it. Since everyone in the world wants to be a screenwriter I doubt that a newcomer with no training could just bang out something that good. You can make it but you'll have to do it like everyone else did.
Lots of hard work and lots of rejection. It's not a get rich quick thing. Try it if you want but be aware that you have almost no chance.

Yes - That is what Matt Damon and Ben Aflac did. The most important thing to remember is that you need to do your homework, read up on what you will need to do, who you should contact. Also important is to be persistant - you may not write 1 script and send it to 1 place and boom you get your big break.
If it is your passion - then do it, do it with everything you have and do it again and again and again until you get the result you want.

it is possible, but be prepared to get rejection letters though. even if you write the best script ever, the production company is going to look at it thinking "Is this going to make us money?" not "Is this a good script."
think about some of the movies out there now, horribly written, but insanely popular.
