I have heard stories that women who give birth have to stay in the hospital for a couple of days. I am perfectly healthy and the Dr. says the baby is doing fine as well. I hate hospitals and I want to be able to leave after the birth as soon as the Dr. says me and my baby are healthy. I hate hospitals because I have had a lot of family members die in them, mostly because of stupid mistakes Dr.'s have made. The longer I am there the more likely I will go nuts. What do Dr.'s expect of the mother, before they let her leave? Do I have to be able to walk in a straight line or what? Does it take longer to get out if you use pain reliever for the birth? I hate hospitals, I am poor so I cant afford a midwife and do a home birth, I hate Dr.'s, and I hate stupid answers. SO DON'T ANSWER IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! I take this question seriously, so I expect the same from people who answer it. Thank you.

I am sorry if I seem moody but today is my due date I want to pop out this kid and get the hell out of the hospital. Hospitals reek of death and latex, I can't stand hospitals, and I can't stand Dr.'s because you don't know if they are Dr.'s just for the fat paychecks or if they actually care about people. Greed is human nature and there are few people that give a **** about others. So don't make any comments about hospitals being good places. Keep your oppinions to yourself.

I have had three children, and the longest I ever stayed in the hospital was 48 hours after the birth (first baby).
With my 2nd baby, she was born at 2:33 a.m on a Sunday, I went home at noon on Monday.
With my 3rd baby, she was born at 4:42 pm on a Monday, I went home at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.
As long as you and your baby are doing well, you can sign yourself out of the hospital WHENEVER YOU WANT TO! What may happen though is that you have to sign yourself out AMA (against medical advice).
Seriously... this is America and you are not being held prisoner and do NOT have to give your consent for anything! Good luck!
EDITED TO ADD:
a poster mentioned the law. What the law states is that you cannot be forced to leave the hospital prior to the time that is allowed by your insurance company. So if your insurance allows 48 hours, they have to allow you to stay IF YOU WANT TO, though they cannot force you to.

I am not a health-care professional, nor am I a lawyer, but I can't imagine that a hospital can keep you in it against your will, assuming you are a rational adult. You are not committing yourself. I know of a situation in which a friend left a hospital before the doc said she could. Again, I wasn't there, but if memory serves, she had to sign a paper saying that she understood she was leaving against doctor's advice. They probably need that in their records to prevent legal problems.
I think some hospitals keep patients too long if the patient has good insurance, and also to cover their behinds in case of a malpractice suit. Nevertheless, I'm sure there are many occasions when it isn't necessary. I think many health care professionals forget that childbirth is not an illness, and that most occasions are essentially problem-free. Nevertheless, I hope you will listen and weigh their advice, because sometimes bad things do happen.
Incidentally, I have heard it said that the more medical interventions that occur in the birth process, the more likely you will need to stay. Just a theory. Not sure how accurate, but there is a certain amount of logic to it.
Good luck to you. I share your distaste for hospitals. The birth of a child should be a very happy day, and I hope you get the experience you want.

It really depends on the hospital. There are some hospitals that you let you go home the next day. When I delivered, I was overdue and went in for induction on a Monday night, had my baby on Tuesday and didn't get to go home until Thursday. You also have to hope that nothing happens where you can't deliver vaginally. If you end up with a c-section I think you stay in the hospital for 3-4 days. I am sorry for the way you feel about hospitals. I bet as soon as you have your baby, you won't even worry about it. There will be nurses in and out of the room to check on you and your baby and to give you tips. Family will come by to see you and you will just be so overjoyed but you will still be ready to come home. Just relax and when you have your baby, don't let all those other thoughts get to you. Good luck and congrats!!!

I don't know how it is if you have a vaginal birth, but I had a c-section and had to stay in the hospital for 6 days. I had a high fever [nobody told me that if your breasts are engorged that you get a fever]...a doctor finally suggested that I pump and that brought the fever down immediately. I also had to pass gas, then pass a bowel movement before I left. It was a horrible experience, and I'm sure that if I were in the comfort of my own home eating foods that I like instead of that cardboard mess they give you, I would've progressed much faster. Hopefully you'll just have a vaginal birth and leave in about 24-36 hours. Good luck and congrats on the baby!!!

The fastest way if everything goes well and your baby is healthy, is by giving birth naturally and with as little intervention as possible (i.e., drugs)
However, you also have to open yourself up to the possibility that not everything may go exactly as you plan. If you're overdue, it is possible for induction or even a C-Section to be scheduled. It will also depend on how quickly your labor progresses; I was induced for ten hours before having a C-Section.
The important thing right now should be your health and your baby's. Believe me, after you hold your baby in your arms, everything else will seem largely unimportant. Good luck, and congratulations!

Okay, I understand what you are going through, but don't come on here taking your attitude and frustration out on ppl who you are looking for an answer from.
If you have an vaginal birth, you will be in the hospital for 2 days and if everything went ok, the Dr. will not kill you in anytime of way.
2nd, if you have an C-Section, depending on how you heal the time frame is from 3-5 days.
Lighten up Mama. If you hate hospital that much, stay home and have your baby, and after you have the baby, go to the hospital for observations. Then you won't have to sleep over.

oh i hear ya!! i HATE hospitals too! i was in a burn ward once and they wanted to keep me for a week so they could keep me on morphine and i was like "heeeeeell no! i want outta here NOW!"... so they let the morphine wear off to see if i could handle getting my bandages changed without pain meds (i think they thought i'd wimp out, they had more morphine ready). i just gritted my teeth. they let me out after being there just a few hours.
hopefully your strep B came back negative, because that can lead to a longer stay (my friend had to stay for >3 days to be on IV antibiotics).
also, it will depend on what kind of pain killers you use, some wear off faster than others. and of course, a vaginal delivery will get you outta there faster.
much will depend on whether you have complications or not. if the baby & you both do fine during delivery (good Apgar scores, minimal tearing & bleeding, etc) then you will get out faster.

My daughter had her first baby last Tuesday. They make sure that you can use the bathroom (both) first and the baby also has a messy diaper. She had the baby Tuesday night at 8:25pm and was able to go home on Thursday at noon. She had a normal birth with an epideral, she didn't use pain medication after except Motrin since she was breast feeding. I think the law actually requires a certain time frame and criteria to be met before being discharged, and that being what I stated above. Thats what they told her she had to do before being discharged.

If everything goes well during the delivery you only have to stay for 24 hours for observation so they can keep an eye on your recovery and on the baby. If there are any complications during or after the birth than they may want you to stay a little longer to make sure that everything is going alright afterwards.

Most hospitals require you to stay 24hrs from the time of a normal vaginal birth. They want to monitor you and the baby and make sure you're perfectly safe before they release you from the hospital. This should be something you should be speaking with your doctor about. You will need an ok from him and whoever the peditrician is before you are released.
If a c-section is needed you will be there at the very least 3 days.
Good luck!!
