"why dnt they take from the rich and give to the poor "
that would be socialism , here in America we don't believe in that . There is plenty of room in Canada or Cuba though if you don't like it

Ah yes, welcome to the world! Taxes are a necessary evil and you don't even realize how much tax you pay. There's: Property Tax, Income Tax, Sales Tax, and for some a State Income Tax as well, FICA which is a Tax that is supposed to ensure you a retirement check, Medicare Tax that is supposed to ensure when you are retired, you can afford to be sick, then there is excise tax, universal service funds, gas tax, alcohol tax, drivers license fee (Fee is another word for tax, when used by a government agency), Vehicle Registration Fee (and here in Texas, they have a separate line entry for Roads and Bridges Fee, makes you wonder what the use the plain old registration fee for), there are fees to use state and national park camping areas or just to gain entrance to certain national parks, their are all sorts of corporate and small business taxes, licenses and fees and the list goes on. A tax is a fine for doing good and a fine is a tax for being bad. Just know that all the taxes, fees and fines are making sure that the illegal alien can get free housing, food, utilities and medical care ... consider it a save the children donation, but don't try to deduct it as such on your income tax.

What you're experiencing is regressive taxation. While our income tax is theoretically progressive - high-income earners pay a higher percentage than low-income - many other taxes, most notably Social Security, but also local taxes such as sales and use taxes, hit those with lower incomes much harder.
The reason is that it's easier to persue tax-avoidance strategies with money that you don't /need/ to spend - discrectionary income - than with money that you must spend on necessities. If you slap a big tax on something high-income types do with thier money - like buy yachts or invest in coporations or buy bonds - they just do something /else/ with the money, something that isn't taxed so heavily.
So, what the government ends up doing is deciding what it is they'd like the high-income to do with thier money, and tax that less. For instance, the stock market's been doing pretty well lately, because the government has coerced high-income households into investing in the market, by reducing the tax rate on dividends and capital gains.
That gives you some indirect control over a lot of money, but not a lot of revenue. To get revenue, the government taxes things that people don't usually decide to stop doing to avoid taxes - like having a house to live in, driving to work, buying everyday things, and, of course, in the case of the biggest regressive tax of all, Social Security, working for a living.

They do take from the rich. If you look at the tax rate chart the percentage is based on income. The less you make, the lesser your tax bracket.
I know someone that is fairly well off, however, and they are taxed 60%!!!! Can you imagine pocketing less than half of what you make. This person started out in an extremely low income situation working when he was in highschool to help support his single mom and sister. So don't think that the "rich" are just born lucky.

Perhaps you should see a tax professional (accountant) ask them if you could itemize and save some money on your return. You see we do have a little bit of a Robbin Hood system if-you-will. You have to have valid expenses to make use of it though. I own a eighteen wheeler and more than half of what I make is paid in taxes quarterly. I don't even get to file anually like most folks they want my money paid quarterly or every three months. I also get to pay twice the social security, a self employment tax, heavy highway use tax, fuel and road tax additionally to the 2290 heavy highway, state and local taxes for permits to operate my truck in their state/ munisipality, sales tax and have to buy all my meals wash my clothes (usual living expenses) outside the home for the most part. I suppose someone has to pay for the really poor unlike yourself who just refuse to work at all regardless of their ability. I don't mind being taxed, but when it goes to help people who could help themselves but won't that upsets me especially when it happens for generations. Not to mention that inflation makes every dollar of taxes I pay worth a little less each year. Meaning that if I over pay, when I getmy refund check that money I get back is worth less than when I paid it in. I think they just want to get a big fat surplus at the fed so they can enjoy spending more of our money. The representation (kennady, clinton, obamma etc.) all want to raise taxes again, so I guess they aren't happy with what we're spending now rich or poor.

Because it is the rich that write the laws, and the rich that influence the law writers. Why in the world would they want to pay for things just like the average person??
