i have black walnut trees and ive been picking them up and putting them in a dog feed bag tell i get enought to bring in were they deshell them and buy them.well i didnt have enought to bring in to sell and after a few days in the dog feed bag in my shed they have mold all over the shells.how do i store them tell i get enought to bring in to be sold?

You will need to remove the hull (black or yellow covering) before storing the walnuts. One of the easiest ways to remove the hull is to throw the walnuts in a gravel driveway and have the vehicles drive over them. You will need to remove exposed nuts daily.

Once the hull is removed, you need to store the walnuts where they have air circulation. You can accomplish this by putting them in small mesh bags and hanging them or by building a frame from hardware wire and wood and hanging that.

You might want to crack a few of the nuts before going to all of this work. If the nuts have a dark skin, they will shrivel rather than cure. You want to look for nuts that have a light colored skin.

My grandpa always kept his stored in those brown paper grocery bags, but he kept them in the pantry closet.
