First things first, that "checking file system C type of file FAT32" thing is the chkdsk utility that scans the hard drive for errors if the computer shuts down unexpectedly, due to a power failure or crash.

Windows XP/Vista can be installed on either an NTFS or FAT32 file system. Most laptop hard drives are FAT32, this is because some manufacturers add support for Linux, which supports FAT32 to a small extent.

Take the battery OUT, plug in the mains cable and switch it on. Disable the power management as well.

A good idea would be to install SpeedFan (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/SpeedFan.shtml), this will show the temperatures.

If it just shuts down without warning and the temperatures are low, I would call the manufacturers technical support. Maybe ask for a replacement if it is still within warranty.

Good luck

- Out of interest, what make/model is the laptop?

Are you sure it is shutting off completely and not going into hibernation? Most newer laptop models have a hibernation feature that shuts them off after so many minutes of hard drive inactivity. It looks like the machine is shutting down but it really isn't. Check your power settings and make sure it is not set to go into hibernation after like 15 minutes of inactivity.

As for the FAT32 issue I don't know why that would be coming up because as far as I know XP can only be installed on a NTFS machine. If it is trying to read a FAT32 formatted drive that could be an issue.

Automatic turn offs is a very common problem with notebooks/laptops. If you have a wireless network then you should immediatly call the service you got your laptop from and ask to renew it or ask if you could exchange it. If you are not wireless and to use your laptop you must plug it in the wall then it could be the weather around you. Overall I think you need to call your service for a renewall.

turning off may be the energy saver settings or the screen saver kicking in. You need to get into the appropriate part of the control panel and check / change the settings.

If it still happens you need to take it back asap.
