I have an existing cooler that must be replaced. Does anyone know how difficult the installation is and do you recommend a guy with average talent tackle the job or refer it to a proffessional?

the one that I have to relace is over 20 years old. Now the squirrel cage has a cracked bearing mount as well as a broken rod in the cage. Due to the mount break it can not be repaired. A welder plus the rod repair will cost more than a new one.

Roof Swamp Cooler

You and a strong buddy can get it up on the roof. I have done it by myself several times a year. I take out the side vents, leave the motor out until postioned on the old roof jack. if you have 8-9 foot eves, you can push it up the ladder yourself, as it is only 100 or so pounds. Or you can use a rope to pull it up if you have "weak" helper, someone to help guide it up the rails of a ladder. Sometimes I loop a rope around a leg of the jackstand and use it to help pull the cooler unit up while I am underneath it. Once on the roof, if using same size cooler, set it onto the jackstand, connect your sheet metal and you are well on your way. Install your water line, install the motor and new pump, put on your belt, then use 3 in 1 oil, or another light weight oil, and FILL the bearings to the cap, run 2 or 3 hours, and fill again, Once a month is a good time to re-oil those cooler shaft bearings. And out here, I try to get people to replace the pads every other month as parts of the valley have very high salt content in their water. Cheap maintanence, Also, think about coating the bottom of the tank with epoxy paint, or at least a good roofong tar, and if you do use tar, as a lot of people do, thin it with a little bit of lighter fluid, as it makes it easier to spread.
Good luck.

A handy person can replace it in a few hours. It really depends on how it's anchored to the roof. And if your roof is flat or sloped. Yes, they are heavy but two or three average size men can get it up onto a flat roof if they use their heads and a couple of ropes. Don't know about sloped. I am a 61 year old woman who weighs only about 120 pounds and I took my old one off my flat roof myself. I replaced it with two window units. My neighbor had hers done by a handyman in a few hours. He had to have a piece special made to fit the opening on the roof because he put in a window one for her.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/XI6AB
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
