WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans on Wednesday scuttled a Democratic proposal ordering troop withdrawals from Iraq in a showdown that capped an all-night debate on the war.

The 52-47 vote fell short of the 60 votes needed to cut off debate under Senate rules. It was a sound defeat for Democrats who say the U.S. military campaign, in its fifth year and requiring 158,000 troops, cannot tame the sectarian violence in Iraq.

This proves beyond a doubt that the Republicans own this war. Sink or swim fools.

Yep, How many of them now, six or maybe eight? have used it to try to distance themselves from Bush, but cowered when it was time to put their vote where their mouth was.

This is why it's plain to see that ANY repub candidate (except maybe Perot (oh, sorry... I mean Paul... same thing) will just get us more of what we've been getting for six years.

Nice try.

In a major victory for the White House, the Senate early Friday voted 77-23 to authorize President Bush to attack Iraq if Saddam Hussein refuses to give up weapons of mass destruction as required by U.N. resolutions.

Hours earlier, the House approved an identical resolution, 296-133.

Many Democrats gave the President the authority to use power. It's not the Republicans' fault Democrats don't have the resolve to finish the job.

they will lose the next election on it.

though they are desperate to NOT VOTE on anything and then accuse dems of doing nothing.

the republicans are straying further from the herd daily.

the iraq war has nothing to do with 9/11, american security or even the global war on terror.

OUR OWN GOVT HAS SAID AS MUCH, when they stated that the iraq war has made al quaeda stronger and that they are not based in iraq - but afganistan and pakistan.

all of the cons are up for re-election and this pro-war stance, in the face of the american public's wishes will haunt them, perhaps to extinction.

odds are the last repubs that will be left in our govt will be the supreme court justices that bush sleazed in...

I love Bush in general as a leader and person, but hes allowed this crap to go on so long that it's making him a fool and mocking his republicans. Thank God, we don't have 4 more yrs. of him. It's time for new blood---I PRAY not Ms. Hillary's!

No doubt, they're preventing any action which would remove the troops, or even just give them longer leave time after serving. The blame falls to them.

They've owned "it" from before it even started. The bummer is, our grandkids will be paying for it in the long run.
