I had one done with my son. To be completely honest with you I was so focused on worrying about the Dr. poking my son I didn't even feel any pain. I know it's scary...it's the scariest thing I have ever had to do. But you'll feel much better after you get your results.
I had mine done to check for lung development also. It was a choice my Dr. gave me...he explained exactly why he wanted me to have it and answered ALL of my 150 questions. I ultimately made the choice to have the amnio and my sons lungs were not developed enough yet. I had to wait to have him and I was on bed rest until I was induced a
couple weeks later.
I would choose to have the amnio again if I knew it was the best thing for my baby. I know it's scary, stressful, and unpleasant, but you'll get through it. I promise. You need to make the best choice for you and your baby. Good luck!!
EDIT TO ADD:
If you are concerned about the chance of miscariage...think about this: You'll be IN the hospital for the amnio. If ANYTHING goes wrong you will be in the best place for fast care for you and the baby. There will be your Dr. and some other Dr.'s also. After the amnio you will have a NST (Non-stress test) to monitor the baby for at least an hour, and another couple minute ultrasound to ensure the baby is fine. Also they do an ultrasound before they insert the needle to make sure the baby isn't going to be in the area they will be putting the needle in.
Again...good luck!

To answer your question regarding pain during the procedure "For most patients, amniocentesis is a fairly quick and comfortable procedure. Some women experience some uterine cramping or a feeling of faintness. "
And to answer the issue of risks to the baby "Fetal loss as a complication of amniocentesis occurs in about 1 in 200 procedures. Therefore, for women younger than 35, the risk of complications as a result of amniocentesis outweighs the possibility that the baby has a chromosomal abnormality. After 35, the chance of carrying a baby with a chromosomal abnormality is more common than experiencing the complications associated with this procedure. "

Yes certain chromosomal abnormalities can be detected using amnio but you have to consider the possibility of a false positive on an abnormality. Also what would you do if an abnormality is detected? If you have information you feel compelled to do something with that information. Whereas if you don't test you can enjoy your pregnancy. Many of the abnormalities they test for are not as devastating a diagnosis as they would have been a few years back anyway. Think about what you'll do with the information before you decide to test.

i had one with my son, they numb the area with spray first, then they use a ultra sound to make sure your baby isnt near the area u are going to get the amnio done at the spot, then put the needle in you and drain the amniotic fluid, they dont put the needle that far in, its done so fast and it was painless, but afterwards the area i had it done at was sore but not where i couldnt sleep sore or where it was bothering me sore. its very fast procedure. theyll probably stick the needle like a 3 milimeters in, i remember it not being all the way in, good luck and if i was ok you will be too, im scared to death of doctors

of course you may :) there's a miles less invasive scientific care called Nuchal Transluceny testing, this mixed with a blood attempt is meant to be approximately 80 5-ninety% precise at figuring out babies which would be at greater possibility for beginning defects and psychological retardation or mothers who may be at a greater possibility for giving beginning to babies with beginning defects/ Retardation. in case you have this completed and it shows which you fall into that best possibility catagory you may choose for the Amnio. yet you ordinarily have the nicely suited to refuse any testing which you do no longer want.

there IS A 1% MISCARRIAGE RATE. no matter what anyone says. just because they did not have one with it doesn't mean the RISK isn't there. some people think they know it all.
and no it won't hurt that bad.

It doesn't hurt at all. They give you a local in your tummy so you are numb. Then they insert a needle into the numbed area and draw some fluid from your amnionic sack. It does not hurt the baby and it is not painful to you.
The benefits of having this procedure done far outway the down side. THERE IS NO RISK OF MISCARRIAGE WITH THIS PROCEDURE.
I've had it done three times with all my prenancies.
Don't worry. You will do fine!

i never had one b/c the risk of miscarraige weighed too heavily on me. unless you have a risk of down syndrome running in your family i wouldnt go for it. we skipped it b/c of the risk and if we found out our child had something wrong it would make no differance to us on carrying the child
