automatically notice all the things you have in common, and maybe look for similarities between you & the other person & only later notice the differences
OR
do you automatically hone in on any differences, and find all the 'faults' only to later realise the similarities...

I notice the things in common and then the differences. I tend to like most people, but I always go through a phase whereby where my liking dips while I make adjustments to the fact that they do have faults. Generally once I go through that I like/love that person more and accept them as they are.

I look for the similarities. I never purposely look for the faults in people. I even tend to overlook the faults in people I have known for a long time.

That's a good question. I don't conciously do either, but maybe subconciously my mind is focusing on traits to be processed later. I know I usually decide pretty quickly if I like or don't like someone, but I couldn't tell you why! I also know it's difficult to change my mind once I've made that descision.

I don't really make comparison or anything, but to choose from those two, I would say the first one: notice all the things we have in common...
