Treading water is just moving your legs like a bicycle and waving your arms out to the side. It is meant to keep your head above water so you do not need to hold your beath.

No. You only hold your breath when you are under water. Treading water keeps your head above water.

No, what you do is you are vertical in the water and you do the breast stroke kick (froggy kick) and if you want to get a workout...dont use your arms...if not you can use your arms to support you simply by moviing them up and down and yes...you pretty much have to breath cuz if you dont then you'll drown! and keep your head above water!haha

Everyone is correct, however, if you are treading water to save your life, you want to expend just enough energy to stay afloat. Relax your shoulders and your hips and breathe slowly and evenly.
You can practice in approx. four to five feet of water (shallow enough to touch, depending on your height)

why would you your head should still be above water and If you breath and get water in your mouth and nose it might be time to tread a little harder

you could if you wanted to, but when you tread water your head is supposed to be above the surface, so you shouldn't have to hold your breath.
