Star Trek TV series

Blade Runner

Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebop (TV episodes)

The Matrix
John Carpenter's the Thing.
Mission to Mars

Star Wars is really space-fantasy, so technically it's not sci-fi, but it still kicks a** :)

Books are harder because there's soooo much source material.

"I. Robot" by Isaac Assimov is a classic, and influenced almost everything written since then.

"The White Mountains" is another classic.

"Dragon's Egg" by Robert L Forward a great storyline involving relative time.

Try reading "The Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies 1". Also read Asimov -- classic sci-fi author. Some of Anne McCaffrey's books are more sci-fi than fantasy -- look at "Freedom's Landing" and "The Ship Who Sings". You might look at Ray Bradbury's books, mostly shorter novels or stories.
I've noticed that some sci-fi authors are very careful about their scientific facts and only write about things that could possibly happen but others do not get too far into the science stuff and write the story while ignoring known science facts.
Good luck on your book.

Well Star Wars is always good for that sort of thing...another one with the outerspace setting is Alien Secrets by Annette Curtis Klause...and the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, it's not really anything about space but it has magical creatures by the ton. Hope this helps! Good luck on your book!

I know this is a television show, but Doctor Who really touches on the aspects of time travel, parallel universes, black holes, and lots of stuff that I can't remember right offhand. It's really a spectacular series. If you don't get it on your television, some of the episodes are on youtube.

Try reading any titles written by Isaac Asimov, and enjoy yourself.
