I used to totally soak mine down every evening after the sun had set. I had a very small garden, as I lived in the City, and I always had so many tomatoes that I gave them away to all my friends and coworkers!! My neighbors used to tease me saying I was going to "drown" my plants, but I had the last laugh when my plants were so loaded with tomatoes that they were in danger of snapping off midway from the weight!!) Tomato plants needs LOTS of water in order to produce lots of tomatoes!!! Hope this helps - good luck to you!!! Take care.

Go to the garden department of the hardware store and pick up a moisture meter. It will tell you instantly the moisture level in the soil. You just stick the probe in the soil near the plant and read the meter. Takes all the guess work out of watering. Good for indoor and outdoor plants. I probably water less than half of what I used to and the plants are happy too. The meter costs about $5.00.

Tomatos like a lot of water, being a tropical vine. Make sure you mulch your plants, to retain moisture and to keep roots cooler. You want to keep the soil moist, but not saturated. Roots need oxygen as well as water. The goal is to maintain an even moisture level, as periods of dry, then wet will cause tomatos to split. Water earlier in the day. The heat of the day is when the plant needs moisture most. Watering at night encourages fungus and disease. If you mulch heavily, watering a couple of times a week will suffice. If you are growing them in containers, make sure they have adequate drainage, and check them daily.

During the hot months, every day, morning is best. Tomatos really like to get showered, so don't worry about hosing down the whole plant. Feed them at least once a week, they are very heavy feeders and will get weak and non-productive if not fed a lot.
