Our main export is capital goods (i.e. planes, computers, telecommunications equipment, automobile parts). Capital goods account for 49% of our exports.
Second is industrial supplies (i.e. chemicals). Industrial supplies account for 26.8%.
Third is consumer goods (i.e. medicine, automobiles). Consumer goods account for 15%.
Fourth is agricultural products (i.e. soybeans, corn, fruit). Agricultural products account for 9.2%.

We import 175% more than we export ($1.024 trillion per year in exports vs. $1.869 trillion in imports).

The United States is running in the red, not the black; our trade deficit is just over $825 billion. Since we owe more than what is owed to us our nation cannot currently be considered wealthy as a whole.

The stats on exports are very telling.

Our country is rich because we have an economic system that encourages production and, relative to most of the world, less government interference to business.

Movies are a big export. We spend and make more money per movie then anyone else.

Besides that, we have always been on the cutting edge of technology, military hardware, and jet propulsion. Most of what gave us the edge has already been sold to other countries, and we are slipping behind.

Good question! We are a consumerist society. We don't make or export much, as far as I can see. Everything I own says "made in taiwan", or "made in China", or whatever. Our designers are well sought after, and that is big bucks. We have made a lot of contribution to the technological/ computer/ internet industries. Our art, (Movies, music, ect...), I think does well worldwide. That's all I can think of at the moment.

Another reason is that this country started out with a great upper hand in our exports......because our labor force was slave labor. This country was built on the backs of slaves.
