Morons at Zalman gave me a badly warped contact plate (or whatever the plate on a heatsink/fan that connects to the CPU is called). It was so warped, it only contacted the CPU on the outer edges. After removing it, I noticed that along the edges of the CPU where the heatsink contacted, there was shiny areas, almost as though the great pressure placed in those small areas damaged the matte finish of the processor. Could this happen? Should I buy another CPU (I can't even get my heatsink/fan RMA'd, unlikely I'll get a new processor out of the assholes).

It's so surprising to me that Zalman is still reputable. This issue seems to be common-place and pc builders (I'm guessing 95% of their customers) are pretty well-informed group.

Well I wouldn't go as far as buying a new processor until you know there is a problem with this one. Unless you bought the processor OEM, I would assume it came with a stock heatsink, try that one and see if the processor works. If it was OEM, go ahead and buy a new heatsink, you will need one eventually no matter what, and test it out. Don't spend your money on a new CPU until you know for sure the one you have won't work.

Henry you are having a heck of a time with your heatsink/processor.

There is a possiblity that the processor is damaged, the top of the processor is metal, thin aluminum. If the heatsink was concave and you put it on the processor when you locked it down it could have bent the metal and broke the silicon insde the casing.

You will have to prove the heatsink was defective, pictures would help a lot.

Good luck.......

P.S.
I would not deal with them after you settle your claim.....

yea it looks like you might need a new cpu your best bet is to well not buy one there, but instead go to tigerdirect.com. this site has all your computer parts you can think of and often has discounts/rebates. trust me this site is reliable, I bought pretty much my whole computer there. the only thing is you have to know how to put it togeter or in your case how to put your cpu in.

youre going to need to. if the contact plate is warped badly its completely useless.

Try to speak to the company about a replacement or discount.
