Yes, it is possible, but average is around 7 months. Every child is different, and they all have different strenghts. Your nephew may not crawl til seven months, but he may begin talking early. The lady could have been fibbing, but her statement is very believable. I am an Early childhood specialist, and I've seen babies crawl at four months.

My daughter did everything very early. She was walking by 9 months. So was her uncle. She started crawling at about 4 or 5 months, and then gave up on that and started rolling everywhere instead. She started cruising at 6 months. Some babies are just quicker.
Though I do think that other mom was not a nice person at all for asking your sister about her baby just to brag about her own.

What was the other woman's definition of "crawl"? When my daughter was 4 months she could get around using her arms or she would roll on her back and scoot across the room. However a traditional crawl did not surface until she was closer to 6 - 7 months.

My younger sister started walking at 5 months. and was sitting up and trying to crawl by 4 months. She never really did crawl but it is definetly possible for a baby to crawl that young if my sister was walking that young.

Usually, between 6 to 8 months. It differes from one child to another with combination of a number of factors; such as proteen, excercise, etc., etc. and including genes. Hence, the woman was not telling a lie. Some babies do not even crawl at all and grow to stannd up and start to learn walking, etc.
It is also a known factor that the slower developer baby is more likely to grow old late (i.e. to age slower than the faster grower child) and vice versus.
All the best!/

Anythings posible with babies but i think the woman was being a typical 'my baby is better than yours' type of person. If your sister had said she was only 3 months the woman would prob have said hers crawled at 2! What is it with some people?

Well, it's unusual, but it can happen. It's never a good idea to compare babies, though. All babies are different. For instance, I have a friend whose baby was walking like crazy when she was 9.5 months old, but wasn't talking much. Meanwhile, my baby was signing and saying lots of words by 10 months, but didn't walk until 13 months. Both kids are totally normal, but totally different.
Also, if this woman's baby is crawling at 4.5 months, she's probably REALLY impressed with and proud of her baby and will take every opportunity to brag on her :)

People are always going to compare or "one-up" others. Well, good for her that her baby is crawling at 4 1/2 months. If someone thinks that it's better when babies do stuff sooner than any other baby, that's great for them. Babies are their own people. They do stuff when they feel it's important to them.

Yeah it can happen. My oldest crawled that early. Now the others nowhere close. I have two 6 month olds that are not even sitting up good. People are silly. I hate when they compare there kids to other kids. Every child is different.

it could be true, but the woman could be a freak. Most babies crawl between 6-8 months, I don't think she needs to worry at all!
