"Yes" is a real word and proper English - "yeah" is the slang equivalent of "yes."
Yeah, yup, nope, and similar words are slang. They are considered casual. Impolite depends on the situation - if you are speaking to a superior, such as a boss or stranger or older person, in a formal situation, then you should use the proper terms of "yes" and "no"; however, if you are in a casual situation surrounded by friends, then slang terms are perfectly acceptable.

the word "yes" is just a normal word with its roots in Middle English. the word "nope" is defiantly a slang version of the word "no" and is a little more impolite or uneducated. Most cultures do not use the slang version they use the proper word "no" .

Yes is just a normal word.

Nope or yeah would be the slang versions. They sound a bit "uneducated".
