Neither. It's a body of water. Just think of the ridicule that poor child would go through...

It can be used for both, but I like it best for a little girl, as that will be daughters name in october! And for all the idiots who say, "thats not a name..its a body of water.." What do you think the name Brooke is? Is "Rose" also not a name because its also a flower? Sheesh....

Definitely a boy. It's too masculine seeming for a girl. River is on my top 5 favorite boy names.

It's a unisex name on babynamesworld.com
River in the last 15 years has not been on the list of the top 1000 names
River most people think are a boy name
Like Ashley, Hayley, Lesley are all unisex names, but most people will say they are girls names
I would not name a girl River
It's honest up to you

The only "river" I can think of is the actor River Phoenix .. to me, it's a unique boy's name.

It can be both but My grandmother's name was Riviera but they called her River for short. She's French-Canadian though. I like them for both girl and boy.

Both. Very nice name. You could pair it with a feminine/masculine middle name depending on the sex of the child.
