Yes.

Kinetic energy was transformed into heat energy by friction.

Heat was not only added to the book.
Heat was also added to the air and the ledge.

The motion of the book also moved air that was in it's path.
Thus some of the kinetic energy in the books motion was transformed into kinetic energy in the moving air.

yes, energy was conserved, some energy was lost due to air friction, some due to friction. the friction heated up the book and that made it feel warmer.
