Most people want companionship to a degree. My guess is that the happy single people are getting diverse companionship without the responsibilities of being monogamous. The unhappy single people are not getting any companionship, or are getting lousy companionship.
You will find that desirable people (usually confident, perhaps attractive, perhaps with money), can be happy being single.
(desirable as their view of themselves)
The other side of the above would be people that lack confidence, or have something about themselves that they feel make them less desirable.
It comes down to confidence.

There are more married people that would be single than there are single people who would rather be married.

I was single till I was 28 years old. I enjoyed it, I could use my money, my time, and my energy how I wanted to. My parents raised me to be very independent. My wife to be promised me the world, but she ended up being the biggest lazy slob, lying sack of ahem you could imagine. I am earning twice as much money now as I did when I was single, and I have nothing to show for it. My home is a pigsty, it pains me whenever I have to go back to that ****hole. She does nothing but feed her face, and ***** about anything and everything. I should have stayed single, but there are children involved now. Once they are out of the house, so am I.
(And before anyone tells me that I need to help clean the house, I am the only one that does. Its me cleaning up after my wife, two kids, one dog, and 30 cats.)

It might be insecurity in some cases, or simply they are more gregarious people who naturally seek out companionship and prefer not to be alone. I think people can learn to be happier single, and once they are happier, it can sometimes translate into a calmer personality, and make it easier to meet people, and therefore possibly not be single!
