Depends on the style of fighting they used. There were different combinations of armor and weapons (usually based on the various cultures the Romans had fought and defeated). Sparks has a list of various items a gladiator might have used in combat. As for what else, that's too big a question to answer in just this little bitty format. Do a library or internet search on Rome, Roman Senate, Imperial Rome, Gaul, Hannibal, Varus, Aqueduct, Roman Road, Legion, Dictator, Crassus. Well, that will do for a start - you'll turn up all sorts of avenues to follow from that..

Did you know that at times they would flood the Colosseum, to simulate naval battles. Back then it was known as Flavian Amphiteater. And gladiators went into the colosseum cells through underground tunnels that connected to other holding cells so that people wouldn't see them. There are also some stones that were found in the gladiators cells that had images carved by the gladiators themselves. It was there last thoughts before dying in front of the masses. One artwork depicts himself slaying a large cat possibly a tiger and another counts his victories while yet another shows the weapons he used.

As the past post said, they probably used swords and shields. They could have also used whips, maces and dogs to maul their victims. The Colosseum was used to show off gladiators skills and they also would flood it up water to stage battles in boats. There is a lot of rich history in Rome - especially the Vatican who is seeped in art and history.
