Be prepared. Know the show, know the character you're auditioning for. If you're reading a monologue, not only have it memorized, but know that show and that character and his/her motivations as well. The director will like to see someone who knows their stuff, not gimmicks.
Also, you never dress in costume because that would be tacky, but you can certainly dress to 'suggest' the part you want.
Remember to find your light and stand in it when you're performing. If you're reading a scene with someone, that's who you focus on, not the director or producer.
Make strong character choices with the material. If they give you notes and the opportunity to do it again, really listen and make the changes. They're looking for someone who can take direction well and who'll be easy to work with for the next several weeks.
You said play, not musical so there's additional advice if it's a musical...

You need to know as much about the play as possible, read the script and the bio of the character you are auditioning for. When you read the script keep in mind any scenes that might be used for cold readings.
if this play is a musical, be sure to wear comfortable clothes for dancing, but look as nice as you can.
and most importantly,BE YOURSELF!!!! you cant be nervous. think of your audition as a performance, not an audition. the judges are just people like you.If you let the true you shine through, it will leave the judges with a good impression of you.

Read over the script or the script they give you follow these -figure out the background of the character through the script play the part, know who you are what you are doing -brainstorm ways to make your audition interesting. - dont be afraid to move around interact with the people you're auditioning with, -change up the tones of your voice for certain things that happen in a scene. hope this helps!!!!!

They will judge you on your ability to memorize and read the lines properly and speak well. They will look at your appearance to see if you are "right" for the part. They will judge your comfort level and your confidence on stage.

No, but I heard it is always good to wear at least one interesting item on you- that the judges will remember you by. Maybe like an ugly long brown necklace with the Fang of a dead sea creature dangling at your cheast. Or something like that you know. Something you can tell them a story with.
