Do what you have to do to get your car fixed and dump these associates. That's all they are, they are not and never was! Real friends have emotions and care for a friends well being.
Live and learn. Don't let anybody drive your car that you don't trust, especially when you're not covered by insurance.

Hmmm, no insurance on your car...you mean no 'collision' insurance, right? I mean, you had liability, right? If not, you'd best comply with the law.
Speaking of law, here's the long and short of it. Small claims will not allow you to bring in a lawyer, and unless you're actually on TV, they can't force him to pay you anything...and that's if you "win". Either way, you'll have to pay for the court fees.
Sorry to say, but when you loan your car out to someone, unless you stipulate in advance that they are going to be held accountable for its condition when it's returned, you will be stuck for repairs. It doesn't seem fair, but check it out with a free legal clinic before you waste your money paying for small claims fees.
What you can do is to either borrow money to pay for the car, ask the repair shop if there is some other form of collateral you can give them until they are paid in cash, or ask if they will let you keep the car there until it's paid off.
The bad news is that they will usually NOT let you leave the car there for free. They are not a charity, they don't care who wrecked the car, and will charge you a daily "storage" rate if you leave it there.
Your best bet is to borrow the money you need to get the car out of the shop as soon as you can, unless they'll let you make other arrangements.
The next thing you should do is kick your so called "friend" to the curb unless he at least pays part of what it will take to get the car out of the shop. Next time, don't let someone drive your car unless either you or they are insured.

First - DITCH THE FRIENDS! They are not your friends if they would wreck your car and then back out of paying for the repairs.
Second - Consider legal action. You might want to contact your insurance company to see if they have any recourse against your friend's or if they can get money from their insurance company.
Third - Take 'em to court and garnish their wages!!!!! Seriously, I don't know if you can do THAT but it wouldn't hurt to get some legal advice. Most law offices offer initial consultations for free or go to a legal clinic and see what your options are.
Fourth - DON'T EVER LET "FRIENDS" DRIVE YOUR CAR. Especially if they are uninsured or under-insured.
Good Luck!

Ask to repair shop if you can start making payments on the repairs. Once you've paid them off you can get your car back. As far as your "friends" go, you may have no alternative but to take them to small claims court. Good luck.
