.gov = Government site
.ca = Canadian site
.org = Organization (usually not-for-profit)
.com = Commercial (usually for profit)

.gov is restricted, but anyone can use .org and .com. I would think it would be okay to use .ca as well, but it would be misleading to your visitors, and is probably only available from Canadian URL brokers.

"Business" or anybody with individual generalized paid-for website - .biz, and some others are also available for this purpose
