I always keep music on in the nursery, it helped both my son 6, and daughter 1, tremendously. it helps get them to sleep and it lets me get things done around the house, like vacuum, dryer and other loud tasks. One more thing about getting them to sleep is if you start when they first come home from the hosp. i go about my normal business, making noise and such this way they get used to the noise and they are able to sleep through it this way when baby # 2 comes along the new baby won't wake up your first at night and the oldest child won't have to be quiet all the time.

I didn't use a changing table, my husband has a really old heavy duty dresser with sturdy drawers that we put all our baby things in.. My father in law repainted it and it matches our nursery.. . We attached the pad w/ a cover to outside.Think outside the box with baby furniture we repurposed things instead of paying $100's for a "changing table".
A good diaper disposal system I have a diaper genie.. It's ok, I hate buying refills.. However, a new one came out and it takes regular trash bags...
You'll probably get a travel system as a gift... The infant seat/stroller combo...It's ok... I used the infant seat, but the stroller is too bulky/heavy for our car.. I wish I would've taken back the travel system and gotten 3 in 1 combo carseat and a lightweight stroller... My travel system is still sitting in the garage..
A good recliner/glider.. If you plan on nursing being comfortable is key... You can get a regular glider for under $200 look for one a garage sales and church sales.. Or you could get a nice lazy boy recliner that matches your decor...!
Good luck..

Some hints:
Mobiles do work but get ones that play for AWHILE. Some are really lame and only play a portion of a song, or a short song.
Are you going to nurse? You cannot LIVE without a "My Brest Friend" pillow. Google it-I know the name is sill but it will give you way more freedom than a boppy can as you can actually walk around with it on and the baby on it and have use of one of your hands!
Never underestimate the power of music. I made a CD of mostly contemporary "lullabies" (mostly just soft songs) that I would play to help us both chill.
Best-
DN
P.S. Ditto on the diaper Genie-2 babies-never had one-never needed it. Target bags can wrap a diaper, too.

For the crib, I could not live without her mobile. It keeps her busy and quiet when she's trying to fall asleep, and she's gotten so attached! I'm starting to worry about having to put her in a big girl bed without it! LOL Also the baby monitor. No secret trick or anything, but a very helpful item. If I had room, I would suggest a rocking chair. There were many nights we could have used one.

Changing table... it is so much easier having a designated area just for changing diapers instead of trying to change them wherever and having to hunt for diapers and wipes.
A chair or rocker, especially if breastfeeding.... I didn't get one and I totally regret it. It would've been so much easier during those night-time feedings. I will definitely get one for my next baby.
Decorations.... it gives your baby something interesting to look at, especially if you plan on feeding them in their nursery. I think it really helps soothe them.
WORST thing to get is a Diaper Genie..... had one and it is too much of a hassle and it does not keep the stink out. Not to mention, the refill bags are expensive. Who can afford that when they have to buy the things they NEED for the baby? Just throw the diapers in your regular trash (or outside trash), you will be much better off.
And congratulations on your new baby!!

I had to move when my 5th baby was only a couple of weeks old and could not have done it without a vibrating bouncy seat. I wished I would have had it with the first 4! We got the Fisher Price Aquarium Vibrating Bouncer. With the first 4 babies I used the swing a lot. It worked great with them, but not the 5th. All babies are different, but those two things are my suggestions.

I could never have lived without the baby bouncer seat,, they have vibrate on them which helps sooth the baby. Worked wonders for keeping baby quiet for a few while I did little things around the house. Just dont leave the baby alone out of eyes view in these.

A changing table- it helps to keep everything organized.
We don't use a crib and didn't buy one- my mom bought one for us and it's just sitting empty. She sleeps with us.
We don't use a diaper genie- waste of money.
baskets- to store booties, socks, hats, etc. under the changing table.
A boppy pillow
A boom box and classical music C.D's- or baby has her own collection of music and 1 night-night C.D.
A bouncy seat
A swing
A&D ointment.
A rocker- a must!
A baby's blanket- which is super soft.

I love the travel swing and bouncy seat. They are very convenient. When my son would not sleep through the night I would stick him in one of those, usually the bouncy seat and he would fall right to sleep next to me. It was a life saver for those sleepless nights. Fortunately, they did not last too long for me!
Another tip, during night feedings don't turn the lights on, get a nightlight. I truly feel that this helped with our son to sleep throughout the night. I bottle fed, when I heard my son awake I immediately went to make him a bottle and then took him into my bed to feed. I never turned on lights that would wake him even more.

Dear Kathleen---We kinda went to WallMart or Kmart for stuff. You will need one close by for depression and the feel better spending spreess... My neighbor brought his son home from the hospital and had a big bow on a 24" two-wheel bicycle... Different strokes for different folks...
