I recommend you go to San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, Mexico. They are in the UNESCO world heritage list, and both are beautiful. Go see the momias (mummies) in Guanajuato and San Miguel is just beautiful.
These are just about a 3 & 4 hr. bus ride from Mex. City
Another option is Costa Rica. San Jose isn't an amazing city like Mexico city or Quito, but Costa Rica has beautiful rain forests (Monteverde), volcanoes, (Poas, Irasu, Arenal) hot springs (Near La Fortuna, check out Tabacon and baldi Terme!!!), whitewater rafting, (Turrialba is good) beaches (but if you don't want it too hot, stay in the hills and it'll be nice and cozy all day and night. Don't worry about the "rainy season" It's not monsoon all day long, so you'll have sun and rain.

Small town atmosphere, privacy, terrific personal service with access to big town life. Great beaches...still a bit undiscovered.
