Air CAVALRY comes form the idea of replacing the speed, mobility and shock power provided by the horse with the speed, mobility and shock power provided by the helicopter. Tanks and armored cars provide the punch formerly wielded by the Heavy cav units; helicopters can replicate and increase the light cav's ability to move rapidly and fluidly anywhere on a battlefield, with the addition of the ability to move through the third dimension over and around the enemy. Thus, as long as the choppers are unencumbered by air defenses, the cav commander has the ability to put his troops virtually anywhere he wants to on that same field.

That's a REAL rough and ready description; hope it helps.

GARRYOWEN!

I believe that the calvary as we typically know it, men on horseback, has evolved. Horses are no longer efficent in military use so the "calvary" evolved to tanks. They then were known as Armored Calvary. Once helicopters came about in military use they evolved again and became the Air Calvary.

Once we run out of fuel for our vehicles and they go back to needing horses they will be plain ol calvary again lol.

The roots of many of the air cav units were original horse cavalry units from the 19th Century, most notably the 7th Cavalry (Custer's old outfit). Getting rid of their horses and taking on helicopters as their means of transportation.
