rather than voting once every five years for someone who gets to make all YOUR decisions for you!....ie; do you want to see some real genuine democracy?

or dou you see us as irresponsible infants who should be mollycoddled soothed and pandered to, and "looked after" by the mummy and daddy politicians?

if politics&the law are bought off by by business and finance, dont we need to start having a direct say in the decisions being taken?

This would be a recipe for disaster , a country needs consistency not constant chopping and changing of laws , rules and regulations .
Our economy would collapse for lack of confidence or investment leaving millions without jobs .The only ones to benefit would be the handful of multi millionaires who would have all their assets transferred abroad and buy up all the collapsed industry , housing etc at rock bottom prices .
I have some sympathy in the way you feel about how politicians spin , never answer direct questions and seem to forget about manifesto promises , not to mention previously held principals ..
All of our main parties are fighting for the same ground with no apparent real choice for the voters
We are also over governed with politicians seeming to be coming out of the woodwork , they will never be short of a job even if they do fail in an election they seem to pop up again !!
So although our system is not perfect by any means the answer is not what would amount to a referendum on every issue

No that would be called undemocratic. Besides people get whims one minute about something and before you know it they have dropped the first whim and moved onto the next one... it's the nature of the beast. And so that is why we have the type of voting system we have and it works well I think.

We have to put our trust in someone at some point don't we?

Public opinion is subject to swinging quickly and unpredictably from one extreme to the other. It is good to have mechanisms in place to dampen the response. However, elected officials should be representing the desires and opinions of the people, not striking out on their own.

that would not be rational or feasible as we would not be privy to complete or sensitive information for people to be able to make an informed decision. also, too many nut jobs out there who don't bother to gather all the facts but only make knee jerk reactions based on their talking heads point of view.

Absolutely not. True democracy is chaos. Consider this: on Monday, everyone votes to drive on the right side of the road. On Thursday, everyone votes to drive on the left side of the road. Just imagine it.

Most people don't have enough time to study all of the issues carefully. Our republican form of government is still the best.
