When the Reichstag burned --- Hitler used this as evidence that the communists were plotting against his government. That night Van der Lubbe and 4000 Communist leaders were arrested. Hitler forced President Hindenburg to pass an 'emergency decree' suspending all articles that guaranteed freedom and liberty. Hitler's police were then allowed to seize property and take people without any sort of trial.
You can sya well that did not happen in America ,but this would mean you lack a mind able to see the evidence and similarity between the two .The parallels in the U.S. on this point are endless. Obviously, the Bill of Rights and especially the 1st Amendment are the most important element of our Constitution. But, due to the government fear mongering that has occurred since 9/11, security, rather than liberty has become the priority. Countless examples of intimidation, jailing, and outlawing political speech have arisen in the past 3 years. Those who question or oppose government policy are branded as terrorists. Under “Homeland Security,” we are told that we need to find a “balance” between liberty and security. This balance was completely absent from the philosophy of the Founding Fathers. This is one of the most dangerous developments in America today.

Not yet, but what you describe may be the first baby steps toward dictatorship.

Bush has issued a new directive that would allow him to seize control of the government upon his declaration of a national "catastrophe" which is vaguely defined, and which he declares himself. If he took such powers, then the similarity with Hitler's emergency decree would be more striking. There's also a contingency plan for concentration camps to be built by Halliburton. Sounds crazy, but it's true.

You say: "we are told that we need to find a “balance” between liberty and security. This balance was completely absent from the philosophy of the Founding Fathers." The first statement is true and it's always true. Whenever we live under a government, we are making a choice for security and giving up some liberty, the government strikes the balance. The founding fathers recognized this and it was part of the political philosophy of the day. However, they also recognized the potential for abuse of power, especially by a tryanically minded executive. Thus, the three part government and the system of checks and balances.

Redheads can indeed donate sperm...there are several redhead donors on California Cryobank's website. How about this: The MC1R gene controls both red hair and freckles. Do most redheads have freckles too? Or "What if sperm donation was no longer anonymous? Would lots of men stop donating just for the money?"

Reminds me of when Clinton launched military attacks, after years of doing nothing, on two occasions: the day Monica was to testify before the grand jury and the day the House was going to vote on impeachment.

Bubba's banana republic.

PS The two biggest threats to the First Amendment are McCain-Feingold and the "Fairness Doctrine," both supported predominantly by the left.

No. Let me know when we start rounding up masses of a given ethnic group and gassing them, ok, because that was Hitler's goal.

Give us a list of your so called "countless examples of intimidation, jailing and outlawing political speech". You're on here posting, aren't you?

Exactly, Bush and Cheney are no better than Hitler. But it doesn't stop there, most of our government is corrupt. They want to see this country loose our rights. They will ruin the best country in the world for the almighty buck. Mark my words, this is only the beginning.

I couldn't agree more - and the same undermining of civil and political rights is happening in Australia too, eg innocent until proven guilty, detention without charge, let alone trial, right to keep silent, denial of due process, denial of legal representation, etc etc.
