You probably have drum brakes in the back.

Some drum brakes do need to be adjusted from time to time, others self adjust when you use the hand brake or drive in reverse.

Odds are the rear brakes are simply out of adjustment. The emergency brake uses a cable to activate them, and your drum shoes are probably just too far from the drums.

These cars are equipped with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The emergency brake uses cables and levers to apply the rear shoes against the drums. If the mechanical pedal or lever that your car has works but does not engage the shoes against the drums you will have to inspect the mechanism, all the cables, and the rear brakes to see what is wrong. It could be out of adjustment, both the shoes and the cables as things wear out and get stretched. If the emer. brake mechanism simple won't hold when you set it, there would be a problem with the lever mechanism and would require replacement. You will have to give it a good inspection. Good luck.

There are always brakes on the back. And if they don't have pads don't drive. Tow it to a shop, from the sounds of it you shouldn't touch a car.

MOST LIKELY YOU EITHER NEED YOUR REAR BRAKE ADJUSTED OR A COMPLETE REAR BRAKE JOB.
