Yes! Countries where midwives support births instead of doctors/hospitals is a perfect example.
Also, nurses could deal with many emergency ward situations that are not real medical emergencies.
Nurses are underused and underappreciated. I'm not a nurse but my mother is a retired nurse and when I was very young I'd see her in action and too often when she was perfectly capable of making a decision she would have to defer to a pretentious, absent, and uninterested doctor.
I am not suggesting that nurses work more - quite the opposite! That there are more in any given hospital/med center AND that they are given more regard and are paid better.

I think that Nurses' all ready have enough to take care of. And, no, I don't think that cost of Health Care would go down. Hospitals or other health care facilities still need the money. With the ongoing Nursing shortage and of course, not being paid enough, we don't need to add further responsibilities. Although, with somethings, there should be a standing protocol so we can inititate treatment without having to wait for the Doc to call back.

Not necessarily. I agree that the mounds of paper (or computer) work adds a tremendous cost to medical services. Before insurance a physician didn't need a full staff just to process paperwork.
Of course don't forget how much ridiculus lawsuits and thus legal fees have contibuted to health care costs. Also our health care expectations are greater than they were 100 years ago.
Every allied health practioner has to work within their scope of practice. This is well defined based on educational background. Thus a RNP can do more than a RN. When an allied health worker tries to go beyond their scope patients can be harmed.

No. It's a great thought, but the cost of health care is big business for Big Industries and Political Interest.

not really, nurses can do quite a bit already, and frankly as a nurse, I have enough to do thank you. The cost of healthcare today is more related to the cost of insurance, the cost of r&d, the cost of medications and the simple cost of doing business. Efficiency in the healthcare setting itself is really not much of an issue.

Not at all. The shortage of nurses is partially a result of the work overload. If more work were put on already short handed, over worked nurses, it may cause even more nurses to leave the profession, thus causing a greater problem.

Did you know thta in America 40 % of your health car dollar goes for paper work? Forms being submitted to insurance companies, claims being rejected, claims being appealed--it keeps thousands of people who are NOT doctors, nurses, lab techs, orderlies, pharmacists, etc, employed shuffling paper. It also gives health insurance execs giant salaries, like on the order of $100 million a year. Congratulations on having such a stupid health care system.

a couple of years ago here in britain they upgraded the role of nurses and gave htem more responsiblity;I suppose it makes sense to have everybody more flexible and more able to do more procedures but then there is a problem with the number of foot-soldiers available to do the drudge work of emptying bedpans.I wonder how it would work out and whether it would be dangerous
