If you go to bed with a lot on your mind then decompress or wind down first.
One way to wind down is by writing out your thoughts before you go to bed. Example: if you have a list of "must do's" on your mind for the next day, then write it down. OR If you had an especially emotionally day, write your feelings down.
Another way to wind down, take a soothing bath with some sort of soothing scents. Lavender is a very calming scent.
Your bedroom environment can also have an affect on your sleep. Take a look at the room around you. Is it really busy or messy? Is it a calming environment? Is there calming and aesthetically pleasing scents, colors and sounds around you?
Diet can have an affect on sleep as well. Watch your sugar and caffeine intake at least two hours before you go to bed. Try to take in as little as possible. If a typical cup of warm milk doesn't help, then try chamomile tea. Also, there is a herbal tea offered by Traditional Medicinals called nighty nighty tea. That always seems to help me.
If not, go for Tylenol PM, it doesn't make you too groggy in the morning and it supposedly (should do more research on it though) non-addictive.
Good Luck

Do not drink anything containing caffeine after dinner, including diet coke or chocolate. Make sure you do not nap during the day. Take a warm soaking bath or warm shower before bedtime, and lastly, spray lavender on your bed sheets, or have a little bowl on your bed stand with dried lavender as it is a relaxing herb. I would also abstain from any movie or series that is action packed that would stimulate you. A good book is something you might consider an hour before you go to sleep.

Usually I can get to sleep using as many methods as possible. I have never counted sheep (too cliche), but I have drank a nice warm glass of milk, and it relaxed me. Next a did a good stretch to relax my muscles more and then I lay in the most comfortable position possible on my metal spring bed and think of the most exciting next event in my life, like an upcoming vacation.

i've suffered insomnia for years and the only thing that works for me is a hot bath with lavender oil in it not to much just a couple of drips, and a few on a flannel and put it under my pillow, and another thing i do is wind things down a couple of hour's before bed, dim the lights down cill make sure everthing that you need to get done is out the way

they say there is a component in milk when you warm it up which helps a person to sleep?
try a cup
you can also lay there in a comfortable position and start relaxing your body, starting with your feet, ankles, and work your way up. i've tried it before, and it does help.
take care.
