They should be the favorites, but that doesn't mean much in a short playoff series.

Anyone who really believes that the playoffs are easily predicted are fooling themselves. That's not to say the Sox won't win, but it's tough to know - it's not like predicting the standings based on a 162-game schedule.

Assuming there are no key injuries to the pitching staff I think it is a forgone conclusion that they will make it all the way to the world series. Pitching is the key to the playoffs and the Red Sox have it this year in Spades. Even with Schill gone. Kason Gabbard was called up for him and is now 3-0. He pitched a 3 hit complete game shutout the other night. Jon Lester is available also if someone else gets hurt. The Red Sox pitching is DEEP this year and that will be what gives them the edge over the other AL teams.

why not wait until October 12th for the answer to this question?

As always, it depends.
Who they play
what the health of the team is
what the health of the opposing team is
has there been many slumps on either side.

I would be putting money on Cleveland winning the world series, so if you were to say Boston will play Cleveland in the first round, then my answer would be no, they won't make it out of the first round because I feel Cleveland is going to win and for them to win, they have to beat boston.

I am really not sure everyone's fascination on other's guesses of what will happen 3 months from now.

No, they won't be able to make it out of the first round. If things keep going the way they are, the Red Sox will be the ones who win the wild card while the Yankees are the ones who win the division. Red Sox will make the playoffs, but they'll lose in the first round.

I don't think so....

Yankees are catching up real quick and they got the historical numbers to prove so (.631 winning average on games that is played in the 2nd half of the season)......

The Tigers is the real threat for the Red Sox because the Detoit Felines can be their opponent in this years playoff, assuming that the yankees catch up....

It all depends on the Yankees, if they catch up with the Red Sox. All might over......

Way too early to tell. I would wait until the last few weeks of the season to ask that one. Momentum is critical going into the playoffs.

For sure they make it.The Yankees are not the same this year and very inconsistent.Cleveland,Detroit,Oakland are all good ball clubs, but lack post season experience. Also the Red Sox have best pitching staff Schilling,Dice,Backett,Papelbon.they will go far .

Stupid People,Stupid Answers. As for your question, I think the Red Sox have a very good chance of playing in October. We need to work out a few kinks with our pitching and bullpen {namely Schilling, Lopez and Taverez} and get all of our starters and relievers some damn run support, and we'll be fine.........We have a good chance of winning the AL East and letting the Yankees take the Wild Card or nothing at all this year.

Yes. They have pitching both at the starter and reliever positions. If they could pick up one more middle reliever to go with Johjima and Papelbon they should be set. Hopefully they don't crap the bed if the Yankees should happen to pull within 5 games of them.
