I love this song... often listen to it - different versions... but I haven't a clue what the song is about! Just wondered if maybe some people here know about this song - its history etc.

Ave Maria
Gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Ave, ave dominus
Dominus tecum
Benedicta tu in mulieribus
Et benedictus
Et benedictus fructus ventris
Ventris tuae, Jesus.
Ave Maria

Ave Maria
Mater Dei
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Ora pro nobis
Ora, ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Nunc et in hora mortis
Et in hora mortis nostrae
Et in hora mortis nostrae
Et in hora mortis nostrae
Ave Maria

HAIL MARY,
full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

Sung properly, it is a beautiful song...

Hail Mary
[with] grace filled
he Lord [is] with you
Blessed [are] you
And blessed
[Is] the fruit of the womb of you.

Holy Mary
Mother of God
Pray for us
Sinners
Now and in
The hour of the death of us.

It's just an hymn, based around the Gospel of Luke:
- first it's intended to venerate the Virgin Mary, "Ave Maria", "I salute you, Mary", and various words to show her high status.
- then it explains her role: Virgin, Mother, Saint etc.
- and finally, it asks her to intervene to help sinners, as she is known to be helpful in "desperate" causes.

Translation:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
