If you're feeding him too little he'll let you know by crying, if you're over feeding him he'll throw it back up. He'll let you know, I wouldn't feed him until he's showing signs of hunger. After 5 1/2 months I'm sure you can recognize when he's hungry. I jar of baby food is plenty for a baby of his age. I'm surprised he's eating 8oz. already though. But like I said b4 let him tell you when he's hungry.

My 9 month old daughter eats about 4-5 5oz bottles everyday and about 2 jars of baby food and one bowl or rice cereal in the morning for breakfast.
I think that your son will let you know if you are overfeeding him or not feeding him enough. I personally think that 8oz is a little much for a 5 1/2 month old but every baby is different.
Talk with your pediatrician b/c now that he's eating the full bottle it will be hard to cut him back.

i give my daughter 2 jars of baby food at night. in the mornign she gets cereal. throughout the day she just gets bottles. her doctor told me that she needs to be getting at least 36 oz. of milk a day. so as long as it's around that your fine. the milk is the most important thing for the first year.

At this age 1 jar is plenty. Most of their calories at this age need to come from breastmilk or formula.
