The R-12 has been ice cold until recently. It's starting to blow hot air after about ten minutes of driving. When I turn off the air conditioner for about twenty minutes, it starts blowing cold air again.

Is it just low on freon or is it electrical? Because the cost of R-12 is so expensive, what are your thoughts on changing over to R-134a? Thank you for your assistance.

You are low on R-12. You must retrofit it to R-134a. No if ands or buts. (unless you can get your hands on some R-12, then you can do it yourself) You will have to take it to a shop that is certified to work on a/c systems. They will evacuate the remaining R-12, replace the dryer and orifice tube, oil the compressor, and put in R-134a. Might cost you about $200 for parts and maybe $200 for labor assuming that nothing else is wrong.

I had my '89 Riviera retrofitted to R-134a. Blows 37 degrees. Beautiful!

Changing to R134 is an expensive proposition. You will need to change the fill valves, reciever/drier, and the expansion valve. You should really change all the hoses too. And you'll still have to located the leak.

There are R12 substitutes, as well as real R12 available. I would go to a certified a/c mechanic, have them sniff out the leak and repair it, and fill with fresh gas. It's the cheapest solution.

your freon is low and that is why you are blowing hot air. by law, when someone recharges the system that uses r12 they are suppose to find and fix the leak first. if you put r 134 in the system without converting the compressor first to except the new freon, your compressor will not last to long and you will have to replace it.

never switch ac refrigerants unless the rest of the vehicle is mint.That is an expensive investment as is. Your compressor is intermittently beginning to fail.Also old seals may be leaking some gas as well, very probable.If the AC is going id say sell the car instead of put more in, because you can trade it as an "ac working" vehicle. Or just roll the windows down.

Even though yours is not a diesel diesel giant has a r12 substitute.
