I swear, I ate a lot of raw food and never once got sick in the 6 months I was there. I DIDN'T eat the chicken (torisashimi I think) or the pork but a lot of beef, horse and fish.

I have been living in Japan for almost three years and have eaten more of my share of raw food and, like you, I haven't gotten sick from it yet (knock on wood!). I experimented with basashi as well as whale and, although I wasn't a big fan, I was surprised at how not-bad it actually was!
One thing also to note that may surprise people not from Japan, is that the sushi here is boring compared to a lot of the trendy sushi restaurants in the States. I haven't seen many places that serve California rolls, dragon rolls or rainbow rolls. The sushi is just sushi. But I do love the rolling sushi restaurants. So great!
But yes, I am confirming that eating raw food, for the most part, is relatively safe in Japan. I would not recommend raw pork or chicken though, no matter how clean it is. You just never know...

I don't know about raw pork, but I've heard of raw chicken. Squicks me out, but if you are adventurous, why not try it? Thousands of Japanese do every day, and if they all got sick, it wouldn't be a popular product.

Just use your best judgement -- if it smells off, don't eat it.

Personally, I can't eat raw land animals, but I LOVE the sea sashimi!

I haven't tried raw horse BUT I have tried raw chicken.
Was so hesitant at first but thought 'when in Rome'
It tasted nice...much like Maguro.
Only had a couple pieces and then waited for the food poisoning to kick in (Homer Simpsonish - after eating the fugu).
No salmonella though so it was a happy experience.

I'm not sure about raw pork...( I don't think I want to try it.) and I've never tried Tori-sashi. Actually, I saw a gal on ABC news on TV trying Tori-sashi in Tokyo and she said she liked it. The chef guy was saying that Tori-sashi is a cut from back of very fresh chicken, and there are no bad stuff in that portion. I love sashimi, but I hate raw Oyster! Yuck! YOu can get sick from it than eating raw chicken, perhaps.

In my years in Japan, I have never been sick...
EXCEPT for last week my friend made egg and then I had to rush off to work and she didnt give it to me until the next day (BAD IDEA!!) anyway as I was eating it, I thought, eww, this smells like its off. Anyway long story short an hour or so later, I started spewing it all up. But thats because the egg meal had been sitting out of the fridge for an entire day. Gee, what a friend!!! lol But anyway,
Japanese food is prepared pretty well, and just because its raw doesnt mean its like a raw egg or a raw chicken sitting in the sun. Its pretty safe. Japan rocks, huh!!!

Japanese believes that raw pork is not fit to eat. I don't say there is no raw pork dish. But it is seldom to see raw pork in the restaurant.
