My friend has a dog (golden retriever) tied up to a tree and they never let it go! They give it a pile of food every morning and a some water. Then they ignore it and never do anything with it! Ex) Never takes it on walks-never plays fetch! Just tied up to a tree the whole day! This is their second dog in 3 years! Their first dog died when it was 2 years old(they did the same thing to that dog) This dog has also gotten aggresive (It wasn't aggresive before they tied it up) I feel bad for the dog!

Me and my other friend have talked to him about it but he just ignores us and then the worst part is that he pretends like he treats it good.

That isn't abuse, that's neglect. Neglect isn't just failing to feed and water the animal. It also includes not giving the animal its basic needs-one of which is attention. If you've caused an animal to become aggressive, that IS neglect. Report it to a shelter and they'll go talk to your friend. If the friend doesn't listen to them, the shelter knows how to take legal action to take the dog away from them.

In my opinion it is very cruel to the dog...however, it would not be considered a cruelty case by the ASPCA because the dog is being fed and watered. There is no law that says you have to give the dog exercise or love or anything other than food and water. Sad, but true.

These people that do this should be tied to a tree for days at a time. Terrible!

Many places do consider having no shelter a violation so check with your local animal control.

The aggression is normal. When I worked at an animal shelter on Guam, we had a large Rott come in who was quite aggressive. The owner was back in the states and had left the dog with friends. The woman friend was afraid of it so she kept it locked in a cage 24/7. After a few months, it went from being this sweet natured trusted pet around the owner's 2 year old to this aggressive dangerous dog we had to put down.

Yes it is cruel. People are not suppose to tie up a dog on a pole and they are suppose to let it run free in the back yard. There is a penal Code that states that. I just finished reading it. It is the Penal code 597.e and it states that a dog can't be confined by a leash or a rope and not given food or water. And there is a lot more about this. Someone gave my the Penal codes for Declawing a cat because I wanted to see it and I came across the confining a dog.

In our area there is a law that limits a tethered dog to 3 hours. After that its considered abuse. Call you're local SPCA or animal control. Its better for the dog. As for your friendship, offer to take the dog. The aggresion is caused by lack of stimulation and exercise. Make the call.

it is certainly inhumane from the perspective of a compassionate human being. im honestly disgusted by that, i mean WHY have a dog? the worst part about it though is it is not a reportable offense - if you were to call a rescue group they can't do anything officially because the animal is provided food and water. - thats what makes it worse. try talking to your friend. if that doesnt work you could do what i did - steal it and find it a good home. i know that sounds bad, but sometimes you have to be a little devious for the greater good. the poor pup deserves better. and rather than being one of the people who thinks -"hey someone should really do something about that" - be that someone. if not you, who will help him?

many places require that the dog have shelter as well. if its been tied to the tree for a long time, there is a chance that the collar can become imbedded in the dogs neck as well, so if that has happened, THAT is an arrestable offense.

i would call your local animal control just to be safe. and then i would stop being friends with that person. if they dont care about the well being of an animal in their possession, then i doubt they care about any human life.

As this person friend, have you tried talking to him?
If not than maybe you should. When you hang out with your friend you should encourage him to take the dog with you!
That's if the dog is not too aggressive with you and your friend. Maybe you should show more interest in the dog when you are around. It is terrible to ignore such a beautiful dog. Maybe bring treats to the dog when you go over there and make a bond with the dog yourself. It's just a thought.

Some organizations do consider this animal cruelty. Some states have and are in the process of changing laws that pertain to animals on chains. It has been proven that chained up dogs do become more aggressive. They are not only confined but trapped. They also lack adequate veterinary care, food, water and shelter. They can also develop infections and severe wounds when their collars become embedded in their necks. You could report this anonymously or call your local SPCA to see what the laws are regarding animals on chains and/or animal cruelty.

First things first - I would exclude that jerk from my social circle because who needs friends that are capable of doing that to a dog? Next, call the humane society and have them busted. That's just cruel and disgusting and the fact that they have done it once before and the dog died shows that they are aware of what can happen and that they are still doing it. Do the right thing and report them TODAY!
