great point, he's also a bettter hitter. The giants aren't going anywhere and they should be willing to drop some payroll. the only hang up might be that the cubs had nothing to offer the Giants as far as prospects.

Benjie Molina is not going anywhere and neither are most of the good catchers in baseball. The Cubs made a deal for the best catcher available to them at this time and it only cost them a couple prospects. Atleast Kendall has experience and has been in a pennant race before. He is a good solid catcher and will do the job behind the plate for the Cubbies.

I'd argue that Jason Kendall isn't even a good veteran. He's a 33-year-old who can no longer run, hasn't been very good defensively for a long time, and whose batspeed and eye at the plate have taken a serious downturn.
I'm surprised at the number of Cubs fans I see on here who believe they got a good deal getting Kendall. I personally think someone like Molina would have been a much better decision on both sides of the ball. They've paying him about $9m prorated this season (the A's are on the hook for the other $4m), and I doubt he'll come close to justifying that cost.

Largely agree with Craig S on this, but I'd also concur with the person who wrote about Kendall being an excellent clubhouse force. I reckon the Cubs have signed him simply as a mentor to their trio of youthful catchers, plus he should have increased power numbers due to the dimensions of the friendly confines in comparison with the cavernous A's ballpark.
Also I think the Pirates are still shelling out $5m towards his salary so the Cubs are getting a savvy veteran catcher/captain for around $4m, which isn't too bad given their previous catcher's salary.

It's like asking,
"Why not trade Jorge Posada to a young catcher like Russell Martin Jr. from the dodgers?"
It is the clubhouse persona, Jorge has been through the ups and downs of the organization and I think Jason Kendall has been there too, so I'd pick the veteran of my team....

Because Kendall is a free agent after this year, and because the A's want to play Kurt Suzuki. The A's were much more willing trade partners than the Giants would have been.
