They are mostly red--but the weather has left us no choice--and we live a ways from our garden.

Yes. My mother grew up on a farm and that's the way she did it. I think it takes longer than doing it in the bag, though. So when you go to the store, you have to figure you can't eat those tomatoes for a few days. I can never find them quite ripe enough for my taste. If you're lucky, you have the place and time to grow your own!

Keep them on the window sill or in a brown paper bag.

No, in a darker location. If they were green, they will only turn red and not ripen. That is the reason that "vine ripened" is so much better.

I have tried it, and it works only if the tomato is already almost red. If the tomato is green, it probably won't work too well.
