I've had my tank setup for around five months now and the filter system only been cleaned once. how often should it be clean? I have a Fluval 304 unit.I have a 40 gallon tank. I have... 1 shrimpgoby, 2 pajama cardinal, 2 percula clownfish, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 red general starfish. All of my fishes diet are different, some eat pellet, flake, brine or meaty. I have my tank water change every six weeks by a prof. however I only had my filter system cleaned once. So again how often should I have my filter system cleaned so my fishes can stay healthy.

You should be doing partial water changes (NOT total water changes) once a week or at least once every other week.
If you use filter media that gets depleted, such as activated carbon, it needs to be changed once a month. Your filters should be OK as long as you keep them clean. Only rinse them in a bucket that has aquarium water which you are taking out, don't rinse it in the sink otherwise you risk destroying all the beneficial bacteria that live on it.

Good question. Your filter should be claned roughly every two months, however it depends on how dirty it gets. I don't need to clean mine but once every 4-6 months with water changes every 4. Since salt tanks are not like fresh water waterchanges are not always needed once a week or once a month, since it goes by your water quality not routine maintenance. If you see the excess brine shrimp "clogging" up the works or laying around on the bottom of the tank, you may want to do a change or atleast a partial cleaning.
Again it just depends on YOUR particular tank since each and everyone is different. I have bristle worms so I have very little to no excess foods in the tank. They do a bang up job on the cleaning side.

A Fluval is time consuming to clean. Here's what I do. I put a Hydro-Sponge filter on the intake pipe of my Fluvals,as a pre-filter.I clean the pre-filter sponge every other water change. The sponge inside the canister never gets dirty(well almost never) and it acts solely as a growth medium for Nitrifying bacteria. The out-fall of the spray-bar tells me when the pre-filter needs cleaning and you don't risk the health of your bacteria colonies by removing the canister sponge.

a million. a fish tank takes time to cycle, while accomplished improperly those issues take place 2. supply up feeding 3. you do no longer want 3 water conditioners. In some factors 2 are required if the faucet water has chloromine, or ammonia added 4. brown algae is gruesome, wipe it in case you like, i'd flow away it 5. you have a team of fish that isn't incredibly proceed to exist on your tank (i do no longer understand what a green leather-based jacket is, yet while it is what google photograph seek got here up with, it won't stay the two) your fish inventory is undesirable sufficient that in case you bought this suggestion from a petstore, i'd guess funds it became into one in each of those: Petsmart/petco/pets at abode/petland/walmart. in basic terms in case i'm no longer being sparkling, you mustn't have any of the fish you have interior the tank. everyone who instructed you they have been ok does no longer understand something approximately saltwater tanks. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that some human beings would say the tang is wonderful, inspite of the incontrovertible fact that it is going to by no skill be healthful interior a year and a nil.5 assured...... EDIT: in spite of the incontrovertible fact that @tabitha's comments are best, they're going to do you no reliable. you want some undemanding saltwater keeping counsel, no longer in user-friendly terms particular techniques which you will no longer understand. you may get rid of all of the fish, wait an suited time for the tank to stabilize, strategies to purpose and do water adjustments and upload supplementations, then upload in user-friendly terms suited fish for the tank, and in user-friendly terms upload very few, and extremely small fish that stay tremendously small. as quickly as the tank is greater ordinary then plan for adjusting your fish stocking.. word: in spite of the incontrovertible fact which you would be stated to purchase damsels, do no longer..!!! in user-friendly terms chromis damsels or a clownfish, no different form of damsel.... 2d EDIT: the Api clear out is a resin clear out and could get rid of maximum pollution from faucet water. it is nonetheless recommended to apply a small quantity of a competent water conditioner, like top. I had ignored the place you pronounced the API clear out, and concept you have been utilising yet another water conditioner. including tension zyme returned and returned is senseless even nevertheless that's what they had such as you to do.

I would think that you should clean the filters soon. Only clean filters work properly. Also, your water should be changed around twice a month.
