There are answers coming in like Tetras, Danios, Mollies, and Algae Eaters. Algae Eaters grow 6 inches long, Mollies get 2+ inches and need ample swimming space, Danios are hyperactive and need tanks that are about 2 feet long (and they have to be in groups, Tetras get about 2 inches and almost all of them need large groups to feel secure. A Betta is your only option, and even then, in such a small space without a heater and filter, it will be miserable. As somebody else said, go get a 5 gallon tank, and if you are an experienced fish keeper (which I doubt), you could get a Dwarf Puffer (but they only eat live or frozen foods, so feeding can get a little pricey). For a new fish keeper, a 5 gallon tank offers the perfect home for a Betta and 4 Neon Tetras if you do weekly cleaning. You could also keep 4-Guppies (Make sure they are all male or all female. If you have the two living together, you will have tons of babies, and a terribly overcrowded tank.). Make sure you research every fishs' needs before you buy them, you don't want to wake up to a tank full of dead fish. Good luck!

No fish is really suited to live in a 1-gallon tank, they are much too small and usually meant for quarantine or isolation purposes.
Why don't you simply invest in a larger tank, such as a 5 gallon. They're not that big as far as size goes and can be had for fairly cheap, at around 10 dollars. Hand in hand with a nice little pump and maybe a heater if needed, you're on your way to having a very happy betta.

There are none. Little fish like Neons need to be kept in groups and in properly decorated aquariums, and there is no room for that. Goldfish grow massive and need 20 gallon + tanks. All fish should have a proper filter, all tropical fish should have a heater. Even betta's thrive much better in a real tank.

I'd recommend not to put any other fish in the one gallon tank. Most people don't realize how much bettas need space. Most people think they could keep it in a quart jar because the pet store keeps them that way. Well, that's a different case because it is TEMPORARY.
For fish, well, you can't keep anythign more than a betta. I would say some ghost shrimps or other crustaceans. I would put some live plants in the tank.

there are none to list.
fyi. the one inch per gallon rule does not work out.
your supposed to take the fully grown length of the fish, say a betta. fully grown, can reach 3 inches.
even if you do follow that rule, not even a betta could live in there.
i never use that rule, because it never really works out for anything.
shrimp and snails are really the only animals you could have.
ammonia/nitrite poisoning and stunting is what will happen to any fish kept in there.

a one gal tank is too small for much other fish, mollies get to big, neons need filters and heat. Sounds like a Betta tank to me. You could put ghost shrimp in with a betta, they are fun to watch.

Well, I personally only heard of a betta that could fit in a tank like that (I know more about dogs), but what's so BAD about a betta???

Guppies, Neons and Zebra fish (tats about it) Remember; you need one gallon for every inches a fish is long. IF you have 2 0ne inch fish, you need 2 gallons. And remember what kinds of fish are the school kind, (school fish won't be happy, and may even die, if they are alone) and loner fish, beta, etc. A beta is an exeption for the "gallon for an inch" rule. You could also get one of those.
