if you were unsure if it was effective yet, then why did you and your boyfriend have unprotected sex?

You should use another form of protection for one to two weeks.
I was told this by my doctor when I had my depo shot.
And, you can get pregnant no matter what contraceptive you are on (including depo!) if you have sex. Nothing is 100% except for abstinence.

It takes up to 24 hours for Depo to be at its full potential of preventing pregnany, the 97%-99.7%. However, its still recommended that you use another form of protection. The shot doesnt protect from STD's and other diseases. Within one year, most women are close to becoming infertile.
