Retarded = less advanced in mental, physical, or social development than is usual for ones age.

No being an independent thinker does not put you under the definition of retarded.

Hey, I LIKE re-inventing the wheel. There is a tremendous pleasure in independent thinking that I am not going to sacrifice; if it means that I do not 'progress' as swiftly along the well-trodden path, so be it.

My sense that I own these ideas, methods, personal metaphors, this unique and ever-more sophisticated perspective, this autochthonous humanity is more precious than jewels--or, for that matter, a PhD., which can only be earned by submission to institutional standards.

It is, I admit, rather annoying to have a relative cretin sneer at me for having reached by my own path the place he reached much earlier by being the good little sheep in his career. And my being ignorant yet of some part of the admitted knowledge of any field* is, of course, unforgivable, blameworthy, contemptible.

It happens so, not seldom, so I've developed the habit of laughing quietly about it. Sooner or later, the problem of the new will arise--and my practiced skill there will be demonstrated.

And it is just possible that the 'well-educated' sheep will see that his path was perhaps too strait, too clear of brambles, too stripped of the possibility of error.

*usually phrased 'generally accepted facts,' 'generally accepted principles;' the institutional trumpet call is easy to hear

I'm an independent thinks and I am not retarded and I do conform to social standards. My independent thinking comes in play with my business. I am very creative and know what I want. When I design a structure it is always something out of the norm, something no one else would think of.

Probably they're retarded, but not for the reasons you mentioned.

Independent thinkers, most experts agree, are retarded because they'd never define themselves as a 'fan'. A fan is a person who's not retarded because he's chosen an illusion to emulate.

A fan will never be accused of being a thinker, independent, nor otherwise. Therefore, fans can't make it onto the playing field to test the concept of retardedness.

All they can do is sit in the audience and boo or cheer, as the canned responses instruct them to do.

What a sad world this is when everyone wants to act like a "Ken and Barbie doll". I prefer to be my own person and think for myself. If you need someone to tell you what to do in life, then that's fine-for you-but leave the rest of us to make up our own minds.
