How do I keep my tomatoes from cracking?

I have several varieties of tomatoes and they have started to crack before they become ripe. We have had a lot more rain this year than usual, and I think that may have something to do with it, but could there be something else.

That is probably the cause. Typically when tomatoes crack it is from too much water. Since you can't help the amount of rain you are getting you may need to pick green tomatoes and let them ripen inside. There is really nothing else you can do until you can control the amount of water your tomatoe gets.

Tomatoes tend to crack when they receive irregular water. If your tomatoes have gone through a dry spell and you try to make up for it with frequent waterings, the inside of the tomato will plump up faster than the outside can stretch and grow. As a result the outer skin of the tomato splits open or cracks.

Tomatoes that crack are still edible. They just won't keep as long. You can prevent future tomatoes cracking by making sure that they receive water regularly, whether or not it rains. Mulching the area around the tomatoes will also help maintain ground moisture levels. Finally, look for varieties that are resistant to cracking.

It seems in hotter climates tomatoes will crack because the skin gets hard and the plant is still trying to grow the fruit/vegetable.
