I was watching a movie recently where people in India made a big deal about people from the US and people from California. It made me wonder if other parts of the world think of California as a distinct place from the rest of the United States - even if they know California is part of the US.

From what I've seen, and having spoken to many Americans, Californians seem to think of themselves as separate from the US. Then again, a lot of other Americans wish they were.

I'm English and live in England but as I drove from Las Vegas to California last week I know it isn't, but never thought it was.

But then we did basic geography at school. Some cultures don't get to go to school.

No, that is silly, they see California as just another American state. It is only here within the U.S. that we seem to have this problem.
