I think it's his (Dave Matthews) way of paying tribute to the Native Americans that "we" took their land away from and/or slaughtered them for it!

Well the term as I know it comes from Americans visiting Mexico. I am not sure why but if you drink the local water in Mexico then you get what's call Montezuma's Revenge.
Americans are not used to the water there and it gives us flu like symptoms.
