You have two different issues in your question.

To use your computer on your cable modem from home, without a wire running to it, you need a wireless router. It will cost you about $10 more than a regular router. But it will send out a radio signal that you should be able to access for about 150 feet from the router (such as in your basement). Your computer will also need a wireless card to receive the sginal. If it is a laptop, it probably already as one. If it is a desktop, you would have to add one.

To get Internet in the park or from a car, you would need what is called an aircard. It receives Internet radio signals from a satelite. The cards usually run $2-300, and then you have to subscript to a satelite service, and often pay "per minute" to use it. It can run a couple hundred dollars a month. It is available from most wireless phone companies.

If you install a router, its main purpose is to allow multiple people to use the cable connection at the same time. On an average, when you are on the Internet, you are actually only sending and receving information about 10-15% of the time. So a router control that connection so that other computers can use the 85% of the time you are not actually using it. As you add computers you will notice some slowing of your connection (as you may be waiting a few seconds for your turn to talk).

All of the major brands are the same. The thing to look for is how many ports (connectors for wires) are on the router. They come with 4, 8 and 16 connectors. So purchase one that has the number of connectors you need. (4 or 8 is the most common for home.) You will also want it to have "wireless" included.

I would like you suggest that you should buy the latest router, which is the Wireless N router. Go to Best Buy or Circuit City and tell them that you need you buy the "Wireless N Router". They'll show you some. Here are some features that you might like them:

1. Longest Range
2. Highest Speed (over 300Mbps)
3. Less Hot Spots.
4. Over 8 users are using at the same time.
5. Totally perfect for home use and office use. Especially when you use Wireless N router with Cable connection, you'll down load movies in a minute.
6. It's very secure (WPA-Personal or WPA2).

Also, you'll need a wireless card for each computer if your computers do not built-in wireless LAN. Remember, the type of the router must be as same as the wireless card's. (Wireless N router + Wireless N card).

Good Luck and Enjoy your new router.

Sounds like u need a wireless router. You also will need a wireless card for each computer you want to connect to it. If you're not real computer knowledgeable, you may want to have someone set it up for you, as they can be a hassle to set up.
