Good question. Beethoven is phenomenal. The Berlin Philharmonic recordings of the nine symphonies are the only ones I've heard and are wonderful. Definately not a local band. I would recommend starting with Beethovens ninth (which if you've seen A Clockwork Orange you will recognize) and then try Beethovens fifth. Also, on a different note, you would would probably recognize The Moonlight Sonata which is a lovely piece. Hope this helps! ;-)

I'd suggest you watch the movie "Immortal Beloved". It's not strictly factual but it shows the passion behind the music of Beethoven, and what a tragic life he had. Hope that helps. I liked the answer about the dog! Good one. It was one BIG dog too!!

I have run into a few people who actually claim to dislike Beethoven -- sad creatures -- but nearly every time I win them over by introducing them to the slow movement (2nd movement) of the 7th symphony. This gets them interested in the rest of the piece and they invariably thank me later -- usually with money. (hint, hint).

Beethoven's ninth is a wonderful piece of music it ranks in the top ten of my favorites. His fifth is also very good it is an intense piece. I don't care much for his sixth though not very powerful to me

I'd skip straight to the 9th, easier that way. I heard of a little Austrain fellow who also did a bit of tinckling on the piano....Mozart or something. Anyway you might want to give him a bash as well

Went deaf at the end of his life, so cut the legs off his piano so he could feel the vibrations.
