Keeping the people afraid is their main tool against knowledge. If they keep the ignorant afraid they will not pay close enough to what is really going on in the world. They will keep living their deluded little flag waving suburbia living suv driving church going sickening life thinking they have to keep voting GOP or the terrorists and liberals will get them.
The media helps, because there is no "liberal media". There is corporate owned government propaganda media.

It really is the White House (Bush, Cheney, Rove, ...) which tries to manipulate the media and American people regarding the types of fearful hypotheticals.
They time these info releases to disrupt the absorption of the truth about the mess in Iraq and the falsifed intellegence leading up to the unprovoked invasion by Bush. They just throw a bunch of crap on the wall and force someone to spend time cleaning up the mess instead of giving full attention to the administration's many misgivings regarding Iraq.

Maybe because good intelligence has warned that there's a better chance of attack than before? The only difference I see between what our media is currently doing, and what our administration has done for the last five years, is that the media waited for a well-researched report to come out before they started talking about the likelihood of an attack. Our president was saying "They're coming for your families!" without citing any solid sources.

Because, this time, they are reporting the truth.
The odds of a strike against the US which is orchestrated by Al Qaida from Afghanistan and Pakistan have increased. A new report by the 16 US intelligence agencies says so.

it's a double edged sword.
Lets say the government said there would be an attack, the media did not tell people and then the attack occurred... suddenly they are responsible for not giving the information.
Personally i think they do play it up a bit too much, but it is better to side with caution than to realize you ignored the situation till it was too late.

you caught me at a great time, im reading "the culture of fear" by Barry glassner. basically the news corporations are trying to scare people into buying things they wouldn't necessarily need. they could also be doing this to gain control of what ou watch and keep you interested on them, which in turn makes them money. so basically its all about money.

I suspect the Bush Administration has a hand up their butts like a puppet. It was michael Chertoff who said he had a "gut feeling" we would be attacked. And i've got a gut feeling he's an idiot.
